There are things in the world that the normal populace doesn't know about. Things it shouldn't know about, and couldn't handle if it did. They're better off not knowing about the things that slip between the cracks, or that lurk just beyond the edge of awareness. They wouldn't understand, and humanity always reacts badly to things they don't understand.

But someone's got to deal with these things. Some of the things that would be considered 'weird' or 'supernatural' are mostly harmless, as long as one knows the proper way of dealing with them. In those cases, it's in everyone's best interests for someone who knows what they're doing, someone who understands, to get there first. If it's a person, it's not uncommon for them to be just as lost and confused as any 'normal' person. In those cases, they need help and guidance too, whether its in controlling their abilities or understanding what's just happened to them.

And sometimes, these things aren't so harmless. In those cases, someone's got to stand against them and protect the world. Cults summon apocalyptic gods, demons run amok, aliens and villians attempt world domination... they must be stopped. It makes no difference if it's a single small town or the entire planet that's being threatened, someone has to hold the line.
